Envy: a Shadow that Haunts Us

Envy: a Shadow that Haunts Us

Date

Envy, that dark feeling that we have all experienced at some point in our lives, has existed since time immemorial. It is a complex emotion that arises when we wish to possess what another person has, be it their success, their wealth, their beauty, or any other attribute that we consider desirable. Envy can be so destructive that it can ruin relationships, sow discord, and negatively affect our mental health.

Envy originates in the constant comparison we make with others. We live in a society that promotes competition and individual achievement, which can generate a feeling of inadequacy in those who feel they are not reaching the same levels of success as others. This feeling of lack and desire to have what we do not have can lead us to feel envy.

Envy can manifest itself in different ways. Some people may experience it passively, secretly admiring those who have what they crave. Others may feel envy more openly and express feelings of resentment or even act in a hostile manner towards those they envy. In any of its forms, envy can generate deep emotional distress and harm both the person who feels it and those around them.

The popular expression “dor de codo” is used to indicate that someone feels envy or jealousy of another person because they have lost something or someone at the hands of that person.

For the Catholic Church, envy is one of the seven deadly sins, and the virtue of charity and love of neighbor is preached as a counterpart to envy.

Some objects are used as amulets or talismans against envy and the evil eye, including the Greek eye, the rabbit’s foot, the fig, the horseshoe, etc. They are believed to bring good luck and protect people from any negative energy directed by envy and the evil eye.

Prayer of Saint Benedict against envy

“Glorious Saint Benedict, fervent and exemplary abbot, my great protector saint and of all those who beseech you. I ask you to remove from me any evil influence and curses from my ancestors, from my enemies and from malicious people.

Intercede before God to alleviate my sufferings and the serious difficulties I am going through, or give me courage to endure them. I beg you to separate and remove, through the powerful intercession of the cross, all evil people with their evils directed towards me and my family.

Protect me from all enemies, keeping away from me the violent, the liars, the ambitious, the selfish, the traitors and those who promote evil.

Protect me from anger, hatred, jealousy, resentment and defamation. From fights, confusions, bad tongues, conspiracies and vices.

I beg you, glorious Saint Benedict, to defend me from physical or mental attacks. Keep away from my side those people who try to harm me. I beg you to keep them away from my daily life and from my work.

Deliver me from financial difficulties, from lack of employment, from all hopelessness and especially from this worry that overwhelms me so much…

(Make your request here)

Glorious Saint Benedict, who fought against the Antichrist, I ask you with all confidence and fervor in your goodness, to grant me your kind intercession for the health of my body, mind and soul.

Oh glorious Saint Benedict, unlimited refuge against defamatory powers; unlimited refuge against bites; unlimited refuge against Satan…

Protect me, shelter and defend me from all evil, especially from the vice of alcohol, drugs and tobacco. From bad thoughts of death and destruction, from malicious thoughts.

Help me to combat all the actions of Satan in my life and in my family, and ultimately, I beg you to help me to combat everything that prevents the work of God in my life.

Help me to trust more and more in the love of God and to reach perfection in my life. Amen”.
